In the world of Dungeons & Dragons, character creation is a crucial part of bringing your hero to life. One of the most important aspects of this process is determining ability scores, which can greatly impact a character's performance in various situations. In the 5th edition of D&D, there are two methods for assigning ability scores: Ability Points from character creation and Point Buy.

Unlike the Ability Points from character creation, Point Buy allows players to save points to buy more expensive increases and increase ability scores to a maximum of 22. When a character levels up, they gain Ability Points at each level, as shown on Table 4-2: Ability Points Gained.

There are two types of Ability Points in the Point Buy system: Flexible and Dedicated. Each character gets 15 flexible Ability Points, plus any gained for voluntarily lowering ability scores below 10 in Step 1. Additionally, they receive 2 dedicated Ability Points for one of their background's choices of predetermined ability scores and 2 dedicated Ability Points for their class's key ability score.

Human characters or those with another ancestry that grants two free ability boosts get an extra 2 flexible Ability Points instead. Dedicated Ability Points are tied to specific ability scores, while Flexible Ability Points can be used to increase any score.

During character creation, players can spend Ability Points to raise their ability scores up to a maximum of 18. The total number of Ability Points spent determines the character's starting ability score, as shown on Table 4-1: Cost for an Ability Score.

In contrast to the traditional ability boost system, Point Buy allows for more customization and flexibility in determining ability scores. Players can choose which scores to prioritize and how much they want to invest in each one. However, this alternative method is also significantly more complex than the traditional system.
